Is it a plant? Is it an organism? Algae are very unusual! Algae are microscopic organisms, and are usually believed to be just simple aquatic plants. Pond scum, really. But it may amaze you to learn that some algae display characteristics we would normally associate with an animal. Characteristics like motility and a cell structure more like bacteria than plants.
Algae can come in a variety of sizes from microscopic to dramatically large. As well, algae are not just water-based. Algae also live in soil, snow, fungus, and animals. But water based Algae, which is what we're looking at today, can be found in both fresh and marine waters.
There are many types of water-based algae, so we will quickly review just a few of them here so you know the difference.
The algae that grows on rocks or plants in the water is one kind. Another kind is more commonly referred to as seaweed because it grows into the water but is attached to a larger stem-like structure.
Water-based algae, in many cases, are also called "phytoplankton", and it is one of the key ingredients that take carbon dioxide out of the air and replace it with oxygen! We need water-based algae (phytoplankton) to live, and they account for a lot of the carbon dioxide/oxygen replacement in the world today.
Often, algae are referred to by colour. Plank tonic algae, like the kind described above, are called green algae. There are other kinds, too, referred to as blue green algae. Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria, even though it has plant-like characteristics as well, and they grow everywhere, including dams, rivers, creeks, and hot springs.
Okay, so you've probably read more than you wanted to about algae. And there's a lot more that you apparently don't need to know. Essentially know this: Phytoplankton is a type of algae that we want lots of in the world to help scrub our atmosphere of greenhouse gases. Because blue-green algae are bacteria, it tends to grow where bacteria would typically grow: in areas with high nutrient levels, slow rivers, low wind, and warmer temperatures. When this happens, bad water can result. While usually people think of algae as being a plant that grows, you might think of blue-green algae and the resultant bloom as bacteria that fester.
At a very basic level, blue-green algae can create unpleasant water. For example, it can leave water with an unpleasant odour and taste; it can clog machinery filters; it can fluctuate the pH balance in water, turning alkaline water acidic and acidic water alkaline; it can pull the oxygen out of the water and both fish and humans need water with oxygen in it to live!
While those are unpleasant and sometimes dangerous results of algae blooms in the water, there are other potential risks as well. Algae blooms can create Hepatoxins which attack the liver and other internal organs and promote cancer. Algae blooms can create Neurotoxins which can lead to respiratory arrest. Algae blooms can create Endotoxins which irritate the skin and also cause stomach cramps, nausea, fever and headaches if consumed.
So how bad can algae blooms get? Why can't we just swim around them or scoop them up? Because they can grow tremendously huge! One algae bloom in 1991 was reported to be over 600 miles long!
What causes blue-green algae to become so dangerous? There are a few things. The first suggestion is the use of fertilizers and sewage that eventually works its way back into the water system. (Sure we use it on the soil, but we live in an interconnected Geo-system that has rainfall soaking the ground, draining off the land into the water, and getting evaporated into the sky. On the way, it picks up all the bad things we leave in the ground).
Another problem that allows blue-green algae to bloom is called thermal stratification. This is a noticeable difference in the layers in a river, where a quickly flowing surface does not actually mix with a slower moving bottom layer. These two distinctly different layers of water allow algae to grow in large proportions, but remain in one layer; however when a temperature changes as the result of seasonal fluctuations, the algae mixes and moves, and blooms can develop.
So how does global warming affect, or get affected by, algae blooms? Algae blooms can have a negative impact on the delicate ecosystem that requires balance to thrive. This is because blooms can virtually kill water, reducing its impact on scrubbing carbon dioxide. And, because temperature changes often act as a catalyst for algae blooms, our warming planet may exacerbate more blooms! Also, the more we use fertilizers or allow sewage to seep back into our water systems, the more we'll see the proliferation of algae blooms over time.
So what's the answer? It's easy to simply say "don't use fertilizer" or "don't let sewage get into the water system", but it's quite another thing to manage it. After all, reverse thinking suggests that a greater amount of fertilizer will theoretically grow more plants which will feed more people. So you might think of it this way: more well-fed scientists can spend time thinking how to reduce algae blooms, than a few poorly fed scientists can spend time thinking how to grow plants without using fertilizer.
And, as our understanding of DNA structure develops, scientists may be able to develop a super-phytoplankton that uses elements of good green phytoplankton that currently scrubs our atmosphere with the aggressive and migratory nature of blue-green algae to create a phytoplankton that can respond to atmospheric changes and congregate where it is needed most.

Aiming for the Sky Reaching Through IIT

I read this statement made by the worlds richest and the most famous person Bill Gates in a daily newspaper when I was in my early teens. From then my fantasy and dream has always been to some how enter the campus of IIT. I revealed my intention to my parents who gladly obliged and asked me to do my very best academically if I wanted my dream to come true. I started searching for resources online for my preparation for the IIT entrance coaching. I live in a small town in remote south Tamil Nadu where few people even know about IIT and its high standard of education.
After a lot of searching I came across one fantastic site which is a wholesome site for all possible resources regarding IIT and other major entrance coaching and learning material. I was surprised at the total commitment of fellow IITians and the dedication with which they worked to help other students excel in a field which they have treaded previously. All classes, tutoring and counseling are done by IIT students and so I could confidently register and start my dream program. The course material, 24x7 tutoring help, one to one interaction with real IIT students, 'solve it live' problem solving facility etc are all only a drop in the ocean as the site offers a wide range of online help which is very useful for students like me who had no hope to even aspire for an IIT coaching previously.
What surprised me was the minimum time frame within which I could get a tuition session with a real tutor. Rescheduling and canceling the tutoring session is not complicating as I was able to reschedule my class during a period of emergency.
I just can't wait for the live video feature through which I can watch live demo of all my problems solved online. This will create a virtual class room feeling and I am sure it will definitely help me with all my aspiration and very soon find me a place in one of the greatest institutions in India.

A New Jersey Student Government Election Made For The Screen
This day, April 29, 2008, I spot a front page headline in my local New Jersey paper, The Trenton Times that reads: Students kept off ballot: District to explore race factor while rescheduling vote. Our local races for school board took place last week, so I thought this was an aftermath.
I was wrong: It was a story about a high school student government election in Ewing, the town where I live. Seven students, one black and Hispanic, five black and one white, were barred from running in their senior class elections the previous week - and no one told them why. An assistant superintendent told the reporter in an e-mail that the decision to bar the candidates was based on a "procedural review" by the principal. The quote marks are from the assistant superintendent, not me.
Neither the principal nor the faculty advisors for the election offered comment to the paper; the reporter had to rely on an e-mail to one of the parents to get clarification on why her daughter couldn't run for office. That e-mail from the teachers mentioned that she was ineligible to run because she had not participated in enough class meetings or fund raisers. One teacher later added, according to the mother, that her daughter used foul language when she questioned her ruling on the election.
This appears to be a scene from Election, a Tom Perrotta novel and movie starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon where an idealistic teacher deliberately tries to rig a student election and keep the "do it all" girl from winning. Only racism never entered in that movie; it has in the Ewing story, although no one knows for sure.
When I was in high school there were no requirements to run for student government, no need for prior participation in anything at all, only current enrollment. We don't ask adult politicians to have prior electoral experience, why would it be asked of student leaders who must listen to their teachers?
It would be one thing if the individual students had some serious blots on their records: academic probations, multiple suspensions or incidents where they broke a law and law enforcement became involved. Even concerns about a platform to encourage an illegal act, such as legalization of marijuana are legitimate concerns for parents and teachers. But no evidence of misconduct was brought forward to the students, their parents and the press. That suggests either arrogance or foolishness; you, the reader can make that call.
The combination of "no comments" and ambiguous rules in a public school in New Jersey is scary. Parents and students still consider teachers authority figures, but not authoritarian and divine; there is a huge difference - and parents know it.
Ewing High's principal is trying to make things right by calling for new senior class elections. However, all of the "no comments" leave this school system open to embarrassment, innuendo, investigation by a state affirmative action agency, and possibly legal action. If an investigation found legitimate rationale for bias, then two teachers and a principal have put their careers at risk over nothing.

A Change in Khasi Matrilineal Society of Meghalaya
MATRILINEAL SOCIETY Obviously, it is seen that the care for the young ones becomes increasingly important in rather the higher types of animal life, as they are more and more in need of proper care and development.
Initially, the care that is required for the proper growth of an individual basically depends upon the parents, sometimes only upon the mother and of course sometimes upon the father also. Naturally, it can be considered as a base for the essential constituents of a family. The concept ‘family’ itself is universal and social in nature.
So far as the people of different level of cultures are concerned, we generally find varying degrees of the existence of two types of family organization viz, the patrilineal and the matrilineal systems of family. In a patrilineal system of family, we find those where the descent is reckoned through the father, however in the case of 'matrilineal' system the descent is generally from the mother side. Apart from these two types of families, there is also a third kind of family known as bilateral or bilineal system of family, in which the descent is recognized both from the father and mother side.
The bilateral system of family is generally found among the people of 'Shella' state in Meghalaya, which had developed a completely different social tradition in context to that of the Khasi Ri Bhoi and Khasi Ri Pnar in matters relating to their hereditary rights in connection with land and properly. But, the people of Shella state have maintained the same matrilineal system of society with however a different law of inheritance.
The term, ‘Matriarchy’ itself is unique and there are grave doubts whatever such kind of family system ever existed in primitive society. 'Matriarchy' of course, is a form or system of family in which the total control is centered either in the wife or in the mother. On the contrary, it is the Patriarchal family which prevailed not only in the civilization of antiquity, but also in the feudal society from which our own society came into existence.
Caring of the young ones especially in its earlier stages is the topmost priority or function of a family and thus a child is the most important member of a family. According to the Khasi belief, "the children are the blessing of God" and thus they take pain staking efforts in ensuring the security and happiness of the children.
But, the earth always had a microscopic exception i.e. all the members of the regular household are considered to be the property of the family of head - ‘The Head’- being the father not the child. However, the mother is the one who bears the child in her womb and protects it from all sorts of dangers and vices around, thereby performing the role of a protector throughout her life. It is because of this particular reason, out comes the word "Anti- Mei" whenever we face a sudden danger. Such instances can be heard or seen in terms of thousands when man were concerned with dire consequences and circumstances; he always took refuge or shelter to the mercy of a deity but not in the lap of a male God.
In the ancient and primitive world, all men abided themselves by the natural laws, but as time passed by several disorders appeared in the natural state and people different among themselves in explaining the real meaning of the laws of nature. That is the reason why, people conferred the power on community to exercise their liberty, but the rights of property and life remained in individual hands. Consequently, customs were formed to regulate the conduct of life in ancient societies. But as the time went on from ancient societies to modern, custom became insufficient and they had to be supplemented by other social codes and laws.
Due to the transition in economic conditions, the husbands originally who were real hunters and warriors had to leave their homes in order to make a living and to work at places under conditions dictate by others. Even the wives and daughters for many reasons were forced to leave their homes and work outdoors. Thus, economic conditions made the family totally individualistic. In the recent past, even in other parts of our country, the system of joint family which was so common but it had to disintegrate as the time passed by. That is to say that, societies doesn't necessarily fall or decline as in the case of an individual, but to remain contented with the past achievements nearly will lead us on the road that leads to death.
In Meghalaya, the Khasi tribe is one among the few in the world that follows and practices the unique Matrilineal System. Vivek Ghosal, in a feature, in Femina, May 1 1997 quotes a Khasi woman activist saying, "We won't let men impose their will on us. No, we will not accept that", However, it is evident from the fact that the child is the natural base of a family and between a mother and a child cannot be several throughout the life even if we cut the umbilical cord during the birth of a baby. Therefore, the inherent dependence is always there and whatever is good and beautiful on this earth will be given the name of mother as motherland or mother tongue etc.
There is no custom or culture that can be static and fixed on this earth, but has to keep on changing in pace with the progress and development of a society. Similarly, the family has undergone a lot of change to the extent that it came to mean all the persons included within the household, infact everything more or less regarded as the property more or less of the family head, the head being the ‘Father’ not the child. Reference can also be made in regard to the conception of the 'family' in the ‘Ten Commandments’ as Quote "Thou shall not covet thy neighbour's wife, or his man servant or his maid servant, or his Ox or his Ass, or anything".
However, time has arrived now to initiate a change in the social customary laws. The jacket also had a shirt style snap down collar, epaulets with knit cuffs and waistband. The back was a single piece of leather so as to not put excess stress on the jacket. The lining was usually made of a lightweight silk or cotton with the military tag sewn just below the back collar.
Most of the A-2 leather jackets made before the war and during wartime were made of horsehide although there were some constructed of goatskin as was the Navy's G-1 jacket. There could have also been some jackets made from cowhide or steerhide. Most of these hides were either chrome tanned and or vegetable tanned.
The color of the A-2 jackets varied but there were two distinguishing colors. Seal which is dark brown or almost black and Russet which is a pale red-brown to medium brown.
